We made friends last night. Unexpected friends. Unexpected place.
In bringing our Christmas family their gifts, they invited us in. Into their home, into their lives.
Sharing life with other people is hard in the best of circumstances. So many chances for the messy, the uncomfortable.
But it was nice to just be with other people. We’d been so lonely. Isolated.
At another time, in another place, it would have felt sickeningly noble. “What Jesus would have done.”
But here, it just felt like meeting new friends. The kids all played together. We talked.
Maybe it’s in spending time, rather than just our money. Looking other human beings in the eye, letting them know, I see you. You matter.
And they saw us as well. This gift of community, so beautiful and yet so normal all at once.
